Spiritual guidance on prayer:
Learning Arabic--It is not normally possible to focus during prayer until one knows the meaning of what one is saying. One should, at the very least, learn the meanings of the Fatiha, commonly recited surahs, and the main dhikrs that are said during the prayer, such as the testification of faith and the prayer on the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace).
Removing distractions--Examples of this includes not praying when one needs to relieve oneself, when one is hungry, or in a place where many people pass.
Preventing the development of a Mechanical Attitude--One should variegate the surahs and dhikrs that one recites during the prayer. If one always recites Surat al Ikhlas, one's prayer will quickly become mechanical. If one recites different surahs, the irregularity between prayers will keep them from becoming mechanical.
